Insurance Endorsements in Ghana

An endorsement is a written change to an existing insurance policy. It amends the original policy document to add, remove, or modify cover, change insured details, or adjust the premium mid-term.

What is an endorsement?

When a policyholder needs to change their policy after it has been issued, the insurer issues an endorsement — a supplementary document that formally records the change. The endorsement takes effect on the date stated and becomes part of the policy.

Common reasons for endorsements in Ghana:

  • Adding a new vehicle to a motor fleet policy
  • Increasing or decreasing the sum insured on an AAR policy
  • Changing the registered owner or driver of a vehicle
  • Adding or removing an extension or clause
  • Correcting an error in the original policy (name, address, plate number)
  • Types of endorsements in Ghana insurance

Mid-term adjustment — a change during the policy year. If the sum insured increases, additional premium is charged pro-rata. If it decreases, a refund may be due.

Return premium endorsement — issued when a change reduces the premium due. The insurer refunds or credits the difference.

Additional premium endorsement — issued when cover is added or sum insured increased. The policyholder pays the extra premium.

Clerical endorsement — corrects a factual error in the original policy (wrong name spelling, incorrect plate number). Usually no premium adjustment.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I get an endorsement on my policy in Ghana?

Contact your insurance broker with the details of the change you need. The broker submits an endorsement request to the insurer. Once agreed and any additional premium paid, the insurer issues the endorsement document. PolicyPing brokers can initiate insurer chases for pending endorsements directly from the platform.

How long does an endorsement take in Ghana?

Simple endorsements (address change, name correction) typically take 1–3 business days. Complex changes (adding new assets, changing cover structure) may take up to a week. Your broker should chase if the endorsement is not received within 5 working days.

Is a verbal endorsement valid in Ghana?

No. All endorsements must be in writing and signed or stamped by the insurer. A verbal agreement to change cover is not legally binding in Ghana. Always obtain the written endorsement document.
