Inception Date in Ghana Insurance
The inception date is the date on which your insurance policy comes into effect — the start of the period of cover. Any loss or damage that occurs before the inception date is not covered by the policy, even if the policy document was issued later.
Inception date vs policy issue date
In Ghana insurance, these two dates are often different:
Inception date — the date cover starts. A client may need cover from the 1st of the month.
Policy issue date — the date the insurer formally issues the policy document. This could be days or weeks after the inception date, especially during busy periods.
The inception date governs when cover begins, not the issue date. A policy issued on 15th March with an inception date of 1st March provides cover from 1st March onwards.

Frequently asked questions
Can I request a back-dated inception date in Ghana?
In principle, policies can be backdated to the inception date if cover was genuinely intended from that date and no claim has occurred in the interim. In practice, most insurers in Ghana will not backdate policies. Always ensure your broker places cover before the intended start date.
What happens if I have a claim before my policy is issued but after the inception date?
If your policy has been agreed and the inception date has passed, you are generally covered for losses from the inception date even if the physical policy document has not yet been issued, provided the premium has been paid or a credit agreement is in place. Get confirmation from your broker in writing.
